Common Bible Phrases

The Bible’s influence on culture and everyday language has endured for thousands of years, transcending generations, civilisations and cultures across the globe. Its impact on society continues to this day, demonstrated in part by common sayings that originate from Scripture.

Modern Use

It’s important to note, the current meaning of each phrase does not necessarily align to its original context or intention. Definitions provided represent modern use which has shifted for many with time.

1. Let there be light

Definition: A lighthearted remark when someone turns on a light.

Genesis 1:3 (NIV): "And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light."

2. Forbidden fruit

Definition: Something desired, but not permitted.

Genesis 2:16-17 (NIV): "And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die."

3. By the sweat of your brow

Definition: By one's own labour or hard work.

Genesis 3:19 (NIV): "By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return."

4. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust

Definition: Most commonly said at funerals, it is a reference to the cycle of life. We come from the ground, and return to it at death.

Genesis 3:19 (NIV): "By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return."

5. Am I my brother's keeper?

Definition: To deny responsibility for the whereabouts or actions of another.

Genesis 4:9 (NIV): "Then the LORD said to Cain, 'Where is your brother Abel?' 'I don't know,' he replied. 'Am I my brother's keeper?'"

6. The land of Nod

Definition: An informal phrase meaning sleep.

Genesis 4:16 (NIV): "So Cain went out from the LORD's presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden."

7. As old as Methuselah

Definition: Someone or something that is extremely old.

Genesis 5:25-27 (NIV): "When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he became the father of Lamech. After he became the father of Lamech, Methuselah lived 782 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Methuselah lived a total of 969 years, and then he died."

8. Fire and brimstone

Definition: The threat of hell and eternal torment.

Genesis 19:24 (KJV): "Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven;"

Psalm 11:6 (KJV): "Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, and an horrible tempest: this shall be the portion of their cup."

Revelation 21:8 (KJV): "But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death."

9. Philistine

Definition: An uncultured and narrow-minded person.

Genesis 21:32 (NIV): "After the treaty had been made at Beersheba, Abimelek and Phicol the commander of his forces returned to the land of the Philistines."

Judges 13:1 (NIV): "Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord, so the Lord delivered them into the hands of the Philistines for forty years."

10. Land of milk and honey

Definition: A desirable place of abundance.

Exodus 3:8 (NIV): "So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey--the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites."

Leviticus 20:24 (NIV): "But I said to you, 'You will possess their land; I will give it to you as an inheritance, a land flowing with milk and honey.' I am the LORD your God, who has set you apart from the nations."

Numbers 13:27 (NLT): "This was their report to Moses: 'We entered the land you sent us to explore, and it is indeed a bountiful country—a land flowing with milk and honey. Here is the kind of fruit it produces.'"

Deuteronomy 6:3 (NIV): "Hear, Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your ancestors, promised you."

11. Of biblical proportions

Definition: A reference to the scale of a large natural disaster or cataclysmic event so vast it draws comparisons to biblical accounts of devastation (i.e. The Plagues of Egypt - Exodus 7:14-11:10).

12. An eye for an eye, a tooth for tooth

Definition: A principle of compensation by which a person is punished in equal portion to the harm they have caused another.

Exodus 21:23-25 (NIV): "But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise."

Leviticus 24:19-20 (NIV): "Anyone who injures their neighbor is to be injured in the same manner: fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth. The one who has inflicted the injury must suffer the same injury."

Matthew 5:38-39 (NIV): "You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also."

13. Golden calf

Definition: An unwise pursuit or idolisation (i.e. money).

Exodus 32:2-4 (NIV): "Aaron answered them, 'Take off the gold earrings that your wives, your sons and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me.' So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron. He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, 'These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.'"

14. Scapegoat

Definition: A person who takes the blame for another's mistakes.

Leviticus 16:10 (NIV): "But the goat chosen by lot as the scapegoat shall be presented alive before the Lord to be used for making atonement by sending it into the wilderness as a scapegoat."

15. Man does not live on bread alone

Definition: A reminder to nourish the soul.

Deuteronomy 8:3 (NIV): "He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD."

Matthew 4:4 (NIV): "Jesus answered, 'It is written: 'Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.''"

16. Apple of my eye

Definition: Something or someone cherished, usually above others.

Deuteronomy 32:10 (NIV): "In a desert land he found him, in a barren and howling waste. He shielded him and cared for him; he guarded him as the apple of his eye,"

Zechariah 2:8 (NIV): "For this is what the Lord Almighty says: “After the Glorious One has sent me against the nations that have plundered you — for whoever touches you touches the apple of his eye —"

17. A man after my own heart

Definition: Admiration for someone who shares the same opinion or interests. A kindred spirit.

1 Samuel 13:14 (NIV): "But now your kingdom will not endure; the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him ruler of his people, because you have not kept the Lord’s command."

Acts 13:22 (NIV): "After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: "I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do."

18. How the mighty have fallen

Definition: A description for a once-great person or entity that has since diminished in stature or respect.

2 Samuel 1:25 (NIV) :"How the mighty have fallen in battle! Jonathan lies slain on your heights."

19. Put words in one's mouth

Definition: The false suggestion that someone said or meant something else.

2 Samuel 14:3 (NIV): "Then go to the king and speak these words to him." And Joab put the words in her mouth."

20. Be a man

Definition: A call to take courage and be strong.

1 Kings 2:2 (NLT): "I am going where everyone on earth must someday go. Take courage and be a man."

21. Jezebel

Definition: An immoral and troublesome woman.

1 Kings 16:31 (NLT): "And as though it were not enough to follow the sinful example of Jeroboam, he married Jezebel, the daughter of King Ethbaal of the Sidonians, and he began to bow down in worship of Baal."

22. Put your house in order

Definition: To resolve personal problems or organise business affairs.

2 Kings 20:1 (NIV): "In those days Hezekiah became ill and was at the point of death. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz went to him and said, "This is what the LORD says: Put your house in order, because you are going to die; you will not recover."

Isaiah 38:1 (NIV): "In those days Hezekiah became ill and was at the point of death. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz went to him and said, "This is what the LORD says: Put your house in order, because you are going to die; you will not recover."

23. Nothing but skin and bones

Definition: Extremely thin. Emaciation.

Job 19:20 (NIV): "I am nothing but skin and bones; I have escaped only by the skin of my teeth."

24. By the skin of your teeth

Definition: Very narrow margin (i.e. time, efficiency or competency) of completion.

Job 19:20 (NIV): "I am nothing but skin and bones; I have escaped only by the skin of my teeth."

25. The root of the matter

Definition: The core reason for something.

Job 19:28 (KJV): "But ye should say, Why persecute we him, seeing the root of the matter is found in me?"

26. Weighed in the balance

Definition: Equal consideration of two opposing views.

Job 31:6 (NLT): "Let God weigh me on the scales of justice, for he knows my integrity."

Daniel 5:27 (KJV): "Tekel; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting."

27. Behemoth

Definition: Something powerful and monstrous in size (i.e. a creature, multinational corporation, etc.).

Job 40:15 (NLT): "Take a look at Behemoth, which I made, just as I made you. It eats grass like an ox."

28. Broken heart

Definition: An intense longing for something lost (typically related to love), exhibited by feelings of sorrow, despair, stress and grief.

Psalms 34:18 (KJV): "The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit."

29. Bite the dust

Definition: Stop existing or living. Die.

Psalms 72:9 (ESV): "May desert tribes bow down before him, and his enemies lick the dust!"

30. Wit's end

Definition: An exhausted state of worry or distress.

Psalm 107:27 (NIV): "They reeled and staggered like drunkards; they were at their wits' end."

31. Spare the rod, spoil the child

Definition: A child's attitude and behaviour will deteriorate if you do not adequately punish wrongdoing.

Proverbs 13:24 (NIV): "Whoever spares the rod hates their children, but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them."

32. Pride comes before a fall

Definition: The principle of having too much pride or confidence will cause foolish mistakes.

Proverbs 16:18 (NIV): "Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall."

33. There's nothing new under the sun

Definition: An idiom for the monotony of life. It's all been experienced, seen, created and done before.

Ecclesiastes 1:9 (NIV): "What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun."

34. For everything there is a season

Definition: There is a right time or period for everything.

Ecclesiastes 3:1 (ESV): "For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven"

35. Eat, drink, and be merry

Definition: A jovial call for others to enjoy themselves and make the most of the moment (usually at a party or celebration).

Ecclesiastes 8:15 (KJV): "Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun."

Luke 12:19 (NIV): "And I’ll say to myself, "You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry."

36. Fly in the ointment

Definition: A blemish. A small imperfection or flaw that diminishes the quality of the whole.

Ecclesiastes 10:1 (KJV): "Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour."

37. A little birdie told me

Definition: A lighthearted phrase to withhold the source of information.

Ecclesiastes 10:20 (NLT): "Never make light of the king, even in your thoughts. And don’t make fun of the powerful, even in your own bedroom. For a little bird might deliver your message and tell them what you said."

38. Four corners of the earth

Definition: The length and breath (far reaches) of the globe.

Isaiah 11:12 (ESV): "He will raise a signal for the nations and will assemble the banished of Israel, and gather the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth."

39. Drop in a bucket

Definition: An addition, action or effort that seems very insignificant in comparison to the whole.

Isaiah 40:15 (NIV): "Surely the nations are like a drop in a bucket; they are regarded as dust on the scales; he weighs the islands as though they were fine dust."

40. See eye to eye

Definition: To concur. Agree.

Isaiah 52:8 (KJV): "Thy watchmen shall lift up the voice; with the voice together shall they sing: for they shall see eye to eye, when the LORD shall bring again Zion."

41. No rest for the wicked

Definition: The principle that those who do wrong will lack peace and tranquility. Sometimes used in jest to explain why a person must work.

Isaiah 57:21 (NIV): "There is no peace," says my God, "for the wicked."

42. Rise and shine

Definition: A call to wake up, get out of bed and start the day.

Isaiah 60:1 (ESV): "Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD has risen upon you."

43. Like a lamb led to the slaughter

Definition: Innocent and naive to the dangers ahead.

Jeremiah 11:19 (NLT): "I was like a lamb being led to the slaughter. I had no idea that they were planning to kill me!"

Isaiah 53:7 (NLT): "He was oppressed and treated harshly, yet he never said a word. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter. And as a sheep is silent before the shearers, he did not open his mouth."

44. Can a leopard change his spots?

Definition: To suggest a person or creature cannot change its essential nature.

Jeremiah 13:23 (NIV): "Can an Ethiopian change his skin or a leopard its spots? Neither can you do good who are accustomed to doing evil."

45. Sour grapes

Definition: Someone who is bitter about something unobtainable.

Ezekiel 18:2 (NLT): “Why do you quote this proverb concerning the land of Israel: 'The parents have eaten sour grapes, but their children's mouths pucker at the taste'?”

46. Feet of clay

Definition: A serious and often hidden character flaw.

Daniel 2:31-33 (NIV): "Your Majesty looked, and there before you stood a large statue—an enormous, dazzling statue, awesome in appearance. The head of the statue was made of pure gold, its chest and arms of silver, its belly and thighs of bronze, its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of baked clay."

47. Writing is on the wall

Definition: An idiom for imminent peril.

Daniel 5:5-6 (NIV): "Suddenly the fingers of a human hand appeared and wrote on the plaster of the wall, near the lampstand in the royal palace. The king watched the hand as it wrote. His face turned pale and he was so frightened that his legs became weak and his knees were knocking."

48. Ends of the earth

Definition: The far reaches of the world. Extreme effort to overcome difficulties.

Zechariah 9:10 (NIV): "I will take away the chariots from Ephraim and the war-horses from Jerusalem, and the battle-bow will be broken. He will proclaim peace to the nations. His rule will extend from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth."

49. Baptism of fire

Definition: A difficult initial experience.

Matthew 3:11 (NIV): "I baptise you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and fire."

Luke 3:16 (NIV): "John answered them all, "I baptise you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and fire."

50. Salt of the earth

Definition: A person or group of people who are highly regarded for their kindness, honesty or reliability.

Matthew 5:13 (NLT): "You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless."

51. Go the extra mile

Definition: Go above and beyond what is necessary or expected.

Matthew 5:41 (NIV): "If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles."

52. To cast pearls before swine

Definition: To offer something prized, helpful or valuable to someone who does not appreciate it.

Matthew 7:6 (NKJV): "Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you in pieces."

53. Straight and narrow

Definition: To behave in a way that is proper or virtuous.

Matthew 7:14 (KJV): "Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it."

Definition: Someone who seems friendly or harmless, but is wicked and shouldn't be trusted.

Matthew 7:15 (NIV): "Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves."

Definition: A call for unity, lest a group disagree and falter.

Matthew 12:25 (NIV): "Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, 'Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand.'"

Mark 3:25 (NIV): "If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand."

Luke 11:17 (NIV): "Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them: 'Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall.'"

56. Fall by the wayside

Definition: To stop using or doing something, particularly from lack of interest or focus on other priorities.

Matthew 13:4 (NKJV): "And as he sowed, some seed fell by the wayside; and the birds came and devoured them."

Mark 4:4 (NKJV): "And it happened, as he sowed, that some seed fell by the wayside; and the birds of the air came and devoured it."

57. The blind leading the blind

Definition: A description for two or more people who are going astray through their own ignorance and incompetence.

Matthew 15:13-14 (NIV): "Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots. Leave them; they are blind guides. If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit."

Definition: Something that underscores the current state of society, usually negative.

Matthew 16:3 (ESV): "And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times."

59. Flesh and blood

Definition: A reference to a family member or relative. Additionally used to describe human beings, often in relation to our limitations or flaws.

Matthew 16:17 (NIV): "Jesus replied, 'Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.'"

Ephesians 6:12 (NIV): "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."

60. Cross to bear

Definition: A hardship or burden someone must endure.

Matthew 16:24 (NLT): "Then Jesus said to his disciples, 'If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me.'"

61. Move mountains

Definition: To achieve something that otherwise seems impossible.

Matthew 17:20 (NIV): "He replied, "Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."

Matthew 21:21 (NIV): "Jesus replied, 'Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and it will be done.'"

Mark 11:23 (NIV): "Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them."

1 Corinthians 13:2 (NIV): "If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing."

62. Millstone around your neck

Definition: An inescapable responsibility or heavy burden.

Matthew 18:6 (NLT): "But if you cause one of these little ones who trusts in me to fall into sin, it would be better for you to have a large millstone tied around your neck and be drowned in the depths of the sea."

Mark 9:42 (NLT) "But if you cause one of these little ones who trusts in me to fall into sin, it would be better for you to be thrown into the sea with a large millstone hung around your neck."

Luke 17:2 (NLT): "It would be better to be thrown into the sea with a millstone hung around your neck than to cause one of these little ones to fall into sin."

63. What God has joined together, let no one separate

Definition: A warning against divorce, affirming God's intentions for marriage are greater than man's desires to separate.

Matthew 19:6 (NIV): "So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate."

64. The eleventh hour

Definition: The last possible moment before it's too late to act or intervene.

Matthew 20:6 (ESV): "And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing. And he said to them, ‘Why do you stand here idle all day?’"

65. Many are called, but few are chosen

Definition: A lighthearted remark to imply most are unworthy of a particular task or endeavor and only a select few will succeed.

Matthew 22:14 (NLT): "For many are called, but few are chosen."

Definition: An event or action (often ironic) that's certain to cause disaster, or something to fail.

Matthew 26:48-50 (NLT): "The traitor, Judas, had given them a prearranged signal: 'You will know which one to arrest when I greet him with a kiss.' So Judas came straight to Jesus. 'Greetings, Rabbi!' he exclaimed and gave him the kiss. Jesus said, 'My friend, go ahead and do what you have come for.' Then the others grabbed Jesus and arrested him."

67. He who lives by the sword, dies by the sword

Definition: The principle that those who commit acts of violence will ultimately fall victim to them in the future.

Matthew 26:52 (NLT): "Put away your sword," Jesus told him. "Those who use the sword will die by the sword."

68. Wash your hands of the matter

Definition: To absolve responsibility for something contentious, therefore distancing oneself from possible future blame.

Matthew 27:24 (NIV): "Pilate saw that he wasn’t getting anywhere and that a riot was developing. So he sent for a bowl of water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, 'I am innocent of this man’s blood. The responsibility is yours!'"

69. Head on a platter

Definition: An exaggerated warning of harsh punishment.

Mark 6:25 (CSB): "At once she hurried to the king and said, 'I want you to give me John the Baptist’s head on a platter immediately.'"

70. Good Samaritan

Definition: A selfless person who helps someone (especially a stranger) in a time of need.

Luke 10:30-37 (NIV): "But a Samaritan, who was on a journey, came upon him; and when he saw him, he felt compassion."

Definition: Usually said in jest to rebuff someone's pessimistic attitude.
